reality check! thta´s it. as I exactly know what you mean.

post you my birthday present, a poem that made me have a reality check just recently. unfortunately I only have it in Spanish or German; maybe you or your sweetheart can translate it.

it´s definitely worth it!

Instantes (Jorge Luis Borges)

y menos imaginarios
Pero si no lo saben, de eso está hecha la vida, sólo de momentos;
una bolsa de agua caliente, un paraguas y un paracaídas;
Si pudiera volver a vivir comenzaría a andar descalzo a principios

The other important thing is you can not please everyone!

I started lecturing this semester and each class was getting more and more confident until i got some bad feedback from a student. Basically she was concerned that my lectures were too short and .... she was comparing me to another lecture.

Needless to say my confidence fell. It took weeks where i felt better and then later i got feedback that its good that i don't waste time on the non-essential stuff.

The other thing is people don't tend to comment or say much which is positive.

I also noted that i started off talking quite quickly in my lectures and once my nerves settled i tended to slow down a little.

great learning experience for me and I conquered a great fear.

Anyway, my other point (sorry sidetracked) is well down, its one thing to teach students and another to present to professionals in the same field. For starters you can't bluff :-)

ignore typos supposed to be well done in last paragraph!

bluest eyes:

yes, I love that Borges poem. Here at Shamash Says, I once had a lot to say about it and you can view the english translation. The best part of the whole post is the lively discussion in the comments section.

You're right: you can't please everyone. Where did we ever get the idea that we could? And, presenting to peers is, as you wrote, a whole lot scarier than teaching students. It's exhilarating, too. :-)

I just visited your blog for the first time in a long time. Sounds as though you've been a busy little vegetarian bee! :-)
